Found your pic at last. That is a mini expansion vessel and for not much exta on a new install is worth fitting to prevent nuisance knocks and thuds etc when using hot and cold water.(liken it to a shock absorber)

Yep still havent figured out how to get the pic into the main body of the post but i havent tried too much either :)

Its been a bit of a nuisance with it being the bank holiday weekend but hopefully should be able to pick one up tomorrow morning.

Thanks all for your help and replies.

It is in theory a shock absorber.
It is mainly used when Combis are being fitted where new water metres are fitted.
Had to fit loads myself.
Stops water hammer.
Lot of water metres in my area non return valves failed so when you ran cold water it tricked combi boiler into firing up for a few seconds due to hammer.
This solves that.
Not required in a non hammer area but will do more good than harm.

Been a good interesting thread this one and I've learnt something.
I'll have to give it a try next time I get this complaint.
