Whilst you're at it, you could try asking for a lamp for your table lamp (or standard lamp, or headlamp or whatever) :)

It would appear that, if you were in Australia (where essentially all DIY electrical work is banned), not only could you get 'plug tops' but, for only AU$ 180, a non-electrician can (well, could in 2010) go on a course to become 'qualified' to replace them (click here).

If professional people on here don't know the difference between a plug and it's top I'm not surprised counter staff don't know either.
This seems to be one of the more ridiculous bits of electrical jargon which somehow arose. Who on earth invented this 'plugtop' thing - and, more to the point, WHY?

It dates back to when wall 'plugs' were first offered and standards were rather lacking, so you bought the plug (which went on the wall) and the plugtop as a matching pair, probably attractively turned in cocus wood.

Interesting. If that's true, why the apparent yo-yo (at least in my experience) of terminology? You're suggesting that 'plug top' was in common usage at some point in the distant past. However, I really don't think I heard the term at all between ~1960 and ~1990 (maybe later), but, since then, it seems to have been coming back into vogue in some circles again!

Even if true, that doesn't explain why the whole thing is now called a 'plug top' because we don't have to buy a separate 'plug top'.

Unless - Buy a plug top and get the rest free.

[I presume you mean "a separate 'plug bottom' "]
Quite so. As I said, I think that this must be one of the most ridiculous bits of electrical jargon!

And then there's "plugsocket"…..
I have a bit more time for that one (well, I do when it's written as two words!), since there are all sorts of sockets, not necessarily for 'plugs' to go into - the socket of a 'ball and socket' joint (whether anatomical or engineering) being one for a start.

There are hundreds, I've just picked a few here...
And I'm sure you'd have to try even less hard to find people selling 12V lighting products and calling them low voltage.

Doesn't make it right.

You will take care over the ordering of the words in that term, won't you....

These are plug sockets.
