I have a ceiling which is approximately 2.6m x 3.6m.

How can I fit tapered edge plasterboard without having to plaster over it?

The problem is that I can't find plasterboard with all 4 edges tapered. Therefore some square edges will need to be butted together, and these joints will end up proud.

Is there a solution?

Tapered is for walls. You can use for ceilings but as you say you will have some none tapered joints.
Just buy standard SE board.
Sand and keep the board edges tidy then seal board edges with PVA prior to fitting.
Seal over the lot with gardz.
Used fibre fuse tape and joint compound.
Damp sponge compound edges as you go to feather in.
Smooth surface as best you can but keep the fibre fuse tape tight to surface. Sealing surface will prevent suction making it easier for DIY person to tape without creating a thick layer causing a bump.
Sand smooth.
Spot fill
Sand again
Gardz
Paint

Fibre fuse will sand unlike mesh which shows through filler. Paper tape is way thicker than anything else so can cause a bump

Oh.
You could used a 2kg box of toupret powdered filler. Be enough. I've used many times for small boarding jobs.

Theoretically, four sided tapered edge board ("4TE") is available from both British Gypsum and Knauf, but it's tricky to get hold of.

Alternatively, if your ceiling has good sized joists and little movement - personally, I have used two-sided TE board on the ceiling, but I have chamfered the square edge to 45 degrees (with a Stanley knife). I then filled with a fibre reinforced filler, making sure these joints were parallel to the light coming into the room.
This isn't the ideal solution, but my tape and jointed ceiling hasn't any cracks, and the joints on the square edge aren't noticeable.

I was also happier using 1800 x 900 boards on the ceiling, handling them alone.

As above, Zinnser Gardz is great stuff for sealing filler.
