I have an old Baxi Bermuda Back Boiler which usually runs fine and without issue.

However, today when an engineer came to fix our gas cooker, the gas needed turning off.

Afterwards, I tried to restart the boiler following the instructions could not get the pilot light to ignite. Got no flame at all.

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or whether something's broken.

Got a gas engineer coming round tomorrow to take a look.

Was just wondering what the possible problem could be and what I can expect?

Very reluctant to change the boiler (as once running, it does the job, albeit probably less efficiently), especially now during winter.

Just wanted some views on what the problem could be?

Thank you

Could be the thermocouple burnt out. Maybe. Had that once and I swapped as I couldn't get the pilot to light..

Very much the responsibility of the gas fitter who worked on your cooker pipework to have relit the back boiler pilot, or at least made every effort to do so.

Your back boiler may be due a good service and possibly replacement of a couple of inexpensive parts but is most unlikely to need replacement.

I agree, then it will last another 30yrs. those things are bombproof.

Thanks.
When the cooker was fitted last April, the bloke relit the boiler.
This bloke just left and didn't even try.
Just said he didn't know anything about those boilers and wasn't his responsibility anyway.
Due to have the yearly service on Monday but have arranged him to come tomorrow instead.

The cooker was working fine till my wife used the top oven. The entire grill chassis etc just fell into the food. The idiot hadn't done the screws up properly. Unbelievable.
So got him coming back again.....
Not happy

I would raise as a cause for concern then to gas safe, especially with this:

Unless you can confirm he didn’t turn the gas off at the ecv (at the meter)

He came round a little while ago and fixed the grill.
Apparently he put the grill chassis in the wrong way round.
Unbelievable....
Apparently the cooker is fixed now.
Just need the boiler bloke to fix that tomorrow....

Turned it off at the meter
Then you shouldn't be paying for someone to come and light your boiler, unless it was defective in the first place. Under the gas regulations he has a duty of care to purge and relight.

That's brilliant. Thank you. Where did you get that from?
I suspect the boiler is defective as couldn't light myself. But this bloke didn't even try.
