What is the difference between a discussion and chatting, is it the frequencey of response, how trivial the topic is or what. I would say chatting is one way of having a discussion

You have to have a "topic" and an "opinion" to do either. I'm not splitting hairs, or at least I don't think I am, i just can't work out what the change in forum name is supposed to do

discussion would be more closley related to a subject (try getting that on here!) whereas chat is just general gossip, maybe the Mods are fed up with posts going off on a tangent regularly? mighty hard not to when links to other subjects occur within the posts.

Pueh. Kendor for a moment I thought you were going to answer:

chatting = what women do
discussions = what men have

Coming back to the original question: I think chatting can be a discussion of a more trivial kind.

I won't ask my hubby what he thinks, cause we're always 'discussing' what a discussion is!
He insist a discussion should have a 'winner' e.g. political discussion programs etc, while I am adamant a discussion is an exchange of ideas/opinions where the result could be many things: indeed a winner, but also a compromise or ending up with a better understanding of each others point of views.

Over to you

yep that's a fair description.

Chat is very throwaway with little coming out of it albeit gossip whereas as you point out discussing something is analysing it.

I'm not sure but I think the moderators and admins want to get away from the chat-line idea?

I agree with you woody but isn't there someone around who kept claiming to have 'won ' an argument if no-one responded to his posts? can't remember who it was.

It seems that admin didn't like the way the forum was going but it seems to me that the forum is what the forum is at any particular time and that depends on the people who are around at the time. It seems a bit pointless to me for the new rules as people won't really change their own behaviour but people certainly get wound up by having innocuous posts deleted.
I think a good example is the picture of the drunken girl that was posted, which was an excellent way of making a point in an interesting thread, and yet it was deleted presumably for some petty reason which has not been explained.

My sister used to be on a 'girls-only' forum and a core of people got fed up with the way the forum was going so they started up their own which was membership by invitation only and she says it's great and they go to each others weddings, parties etc.
Who knows, maybe this forum will end up going the same way?

What, everyone getting married inviting this bunch? (would make an easy wedding present list though :D :D )

Haven't had much rain for a while out West ....
