Ceiling light to double switch for 2 separate lights?

Hey, I haven’t done any electrical DIY in yonks and can not remember most of what I learnt.

I’m basically wanting to run LED lighting up some stairs which can be turned on and off using the switch which turns the ceiling stair light on, but separately. But unsure if this is possible?

The picture below shows the ceiling light cable, the grey cable is the new cable for the LED light already wired.

So can I use the existing wires to power both switches separately?

Doesn’t look like you have a neutral so not feasible. That existing 3 core cable is almost certainly standard 2 way switching

When you say 2 way do you mean it has 2 switches for the 1 light? As there is a switch upstairs to control the light as well.

If this is the case, how would I get around this?

Some work was done to the ceiling lights where down lighters were installed, is it possible to come off of that?

Or, on the other side of the wall is a plug socket. Could I power it from that?

It would be normal practice to connect a stairway lighting circuit with one of these methods https://www.diynot.com/wiki/Electrics:Two-way-lighting You will see that the neutral connection goes to the light fitting not the switch.
You could power it from a socket using a switched FCU fused down to 3A but you would need to spur off from the socket to the FCU if you wanted to have it at eye level.

This is now what I’m thinking I’ll do.

So just to see if I have this correct:
Spur from the socket > switch > plug which the LED lights

I’ll just have to run a cable from the socket up the wall to the switch and then back down to the socket for the LED lights, right?

The plug is how I’m powering the LED lights so this can work perfectly.

That looks like a plasterboard wall, can you run another cable to duplicate the existing 3 core & earth?

Please post a pic. showing the socket and led supply. Try and get as wide an angle as possible that shows where the FCU would be fixed and as much wall as possible.

Would it have cost the "Original Installer" much to leave those wires shown in the photo

to make things somewhat easier for anyone following ?
