Ceiling light wiring query

It is easier with some sort of tester, wife keeps buying me them, 1728827579391.png1728827841943.png1728827930801.pngClamp-meter-small.jpg some are useless tat, and some are very handy, even the old neon screwdriver can help, my favourite is last on the left, but that is also the most expensive. Some how she thinks I would like a £2.05 multi-meter from Temu, and my £35 clamp on is not good enough?

But you need some thing to test, I like the multi-meter without a wired amps range, as you can't get it wrong with a large bang, and all those shown do not test amps with wires, so will not go bang if set to wrong range. May stop working, but will not go bang. Really want gs38 test leads to be safe, but some thing is better than nothing,

This is the classic situation where a non contact device (I'd use a LED screwdriver) would have this sorted in seconds.

Sorry to check again. when you say power off- did you mean at the main power/fuses, or tye switch on the wall? I'm assuming it is the latter, as no power= no beep on multimeter?

Turn off the mains power ,preferably to ALL circuits,at your fusebox/ consumer unit.

ok I did that and tested with the continuity meter, but none of the blacks beeped when paired with red

with the block of 3 reds with that rooms switch turned on (but power off)

The OP is replacing two light fittings, one with a single cable feeding it.

yes, have tried the meter with the block of 3 reds, paired with each of the blacks, with light switch on/off, but getting no bleeps. meter reads OL but does not change when probes touch wires
