Hi Everyone,

We’ve just moved into a rental property, and the house has wall lights installed throughout. I’d like to replace them with ceiling lights for better lighting and aesthetics.

I’m assuming I’ll need the landlord’s permission before making any changes, but in the meantime, can anyone recommend a ceiling light that’s easy to install and could potentially be swapped back when we move out? Ideally, something renter-friendly that doesn’t require major rewiring.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have found other than top floor, access to wiring rather a problem, so we have gone for uplighters, 1733055350608.png and also cabinet lights 20230227_163006.jpg the problem is the switching on/off, so we use smart socket adaptors and main light switch, and Google Nest Mini's so hey google turn on/off living room lights works all. If upstairs we had floor boards I would have considered an extra ceiling lamp, fitted the biggest I could find, 20231211_233856[1].jpg which is heavy so used plug in ceiling rose, so could wire up on the floor, then lift up and slide in the plug. The one I used it seems no longer made. Ceiling rose.jpg But there are others. It does raise the question with rented property when you leave can you take it with you? But my floors had started to fail, so were covered over with plywood, so to get access looking are both original board and new, so would be easier to drop the ceiling, and that's also a big job.

One method could be lighting track, one could install something like this

take it to the wall where a wall light is, and use some track up the wall, so it looks as if designed that way, considering this with the kitchen lights.

Especially in a rented property
There may be some very specific structural reasons for not having ceiling lights, such as, but certainly not limited to, a block of flats having just a concrete slab as ceiling and floor and not being able to chase the cable in.
