Cementing Steel

Hi
Question is about mortar mix, I need to fill a gap of about 250mm above a steel beam.
Its not load bearing/structural just decorative so when cementing on top of steel anything beside 3/1 mix I should be doing.
I have done minor jobs to brick/stone before but never steel - cant get in my head how metal and cement bond, I am probably over thinking this.

Not a brickie but if it was me I'd be packing with bricks or blocks

If I read your post correctly then you are saying all cement/concrete?

Maybe I was off with my description
I want to lay bricks direct onto steel what mortar should I use and do I have to do anything to the steel
