just a query, Would the central heating pump run without installing it onto the system when a 240v direct supply is put to it without any water passing through?

Thanks

Yes.

Don't run it dry for too long though as it's meant to cool itself by passing water!

One wonders why anyone would wish do do that?

Surely a pump is for pumping ( or at least circulating water! )

Yeah it was just a test. With the problems that im having with the heating/hot water i took out the old pump from my system and put a 240v supply to it so i could look inside to see if the blade spun. it was trying to but seemed to be seizing. The blade spins when done manually so this puzzled me hence taking it out to look inside. I think a new pump is in order.

Thanks chaps.

If the motor capacitor is failed or failing then the torque is zero or low.

The cap can be replaced on its own. Usually 2.6 µF but you can measure the exact value on your DVM.
