Cheap as chips !

Not good for the engine long term but I expect there are many people who run a diesel engined car because they have oil-fired ch.
Oilman?

There was a lengthy article in the Grauniad a while back about home made diesel.

They centered their attention on S Wales, cos the Asda at Swansea or Cardiff (can't remember which) kept selling out of their cheapie own-brand veg oil.

Others were usingrecycled oil from chippies, and it was rumoured that for a while, the local police were following suspects whose exhaust niffed of fried fish, stopping them and seeing if they had paid their duty.....

I don't want to try it out on a fairly new car, though...........

I don't know if anybody has used the Bio-diesel, they brought it in a few years ago and Reading Buses trialled it. It did smell of chips - but on second thoughts, it was the chips that smelt of Bio-diesel- because it was made from Rape Seed Oil, as vegetable oil, there you go.

Well, you know my theory on my cheap cars, so I'm up for at least trying it and letting you know how it goes, though perhaps not taking it up full time.

Are we literally talking SmartPrice vegetable oil straight into the diesel tank, or is there some filtration process?

Straight cooking oil is not good for the engine. It will run, but it's too fatty although it can be treated with methanol. I think merc engines run better than most on it though. Unless you are getting the cooking oil free then it's cheaper to run on ch oil which is the same as diesel fuel.

Just pop along to the links given originally --- BioPower explains how to make sort of viable !!

This just occurred to me after reading the links etc...

Does this mean that electric car drivers have to pay for a higher rate of elastic trickery when they charge their batteries to allow for duty???

Also, can I buy duty free fuel for my petrol lawn mower, strimmer and disc cutter??? :p

Finally, my father-in-law said this evening that it has been mentioned that there is a shortage of fuel... Is this spin to justify the war again???

Come the revolution!!!

Perhaps therein lurks a germ of an idea ... produce the three with a common transferable engine unit .. a little gearing here and there and off to go.

Just saw on TV Powergen increasing prices again !! 17.6 and 6.9 % Gas and Electric ... This is quickly becoming a state of emergency surely ?

Perhaps a rotary cultivator with a railway bogey, Mr Good. ;)

Is CH oil really the same as diesel? Do they check at all, I mean, if you are getting through an extra 200 gallons a year will they start asking questions? Such as "are you breeding large reptiles in there?" or "are you running an unlicensed sauna?". ;) Or perhaps even "Are Tom and Barbara next door syphoning it out to heat their pigshed? I really should stop watching UK Gold!

How much is CH oil?

It's near enough for your car to run ok but it is detectable by Customs & Excise guys.

It's a bit obvious though. If customs take a sample from your tank and see it's bright blue they're going to look a bit closer. They can detect the low duty fuel chemically, so it's not just a visual check. Nice try though.
I think if you've got a diesel car there is very little chance of you being checked if you run it on ch fuel. I've got a diesel car but solid fuel ch, or I may be tempted. I still get 65mpg from 1.8 escort anyway.

Moons bygone .. in friend's lorry, he was pulled by C&E mobile Lab spot check they tested the specific gravity of the fuel, the colour stains are a help to them .. lorry was relatively new to friend - old with A license cost a bomb - Lucky really, friend running haulage from his parental farm - fully red ;)
Worked himself to early grave in his late thirties !!

Curious situation, if they catch you using red they can do you. Probably no legislation saying it must be white though, therefore if you change red to blue?

The reason people want to dye it blue is an anti-theft measure, especially when those mobile types are roaming nearby. C & E will chemically check anything with any colour in it. The emerald isle has their agricultural fuel dyed green (wouldn't you know it), some of our continental brethren also have other colours, but just in case you fancied trying it - there is also a chemical added which can be detected.
Anything that is not an ordinary road going vehicle can use the lower tax diesel legitimately.
