Thank you for your reply Stevethespreader, thanks for the suggestion of that power washer.
This afternoon I found that by hammering the layers of paint, it blows it quite substantially. So it can then be removed easily or with some chiselling. Time consuming but it can be done. Perhaps hammering to blow the layers, then jet washing will be quickest.
