Rule of thumb. If you want a challenge, go for a graded system and live with the fault lights when you failed to set it properly (or call an installer), or choose a good brand DIY system, those are geared towards less competent DIYers.
If you live with fault lights ( graded system ) or live with a system where for ease of use fault reporting is geared towards the less competent DIYer then are you not then living with a system that is faulty and may not go to alarm when an intruder does break in.
Your rule of thumb seems to be saying that DIYers should live with less reliable systems simply because they are DIYers who ( you imply ) cannot cope with a system that reports faults in a more robust way.
