I suspect there is a degree of spin in this news article. It’s well known that certain protected characteristics are persecuted in Iran, so faking homosexuality or christianity for example are a good ruse for an asylum application.

Is it plausible that when the individual claimed his faith, he was asked what these specific books were about and chanced his luck with a good but incorrect guess?

People with no religion can be moral just as people with genuine religious beliefs can be moral.
Today we have an aggressive Atheism which goes out its way to denigrate all religious believers.
A lot of the criticism religion receives is deserved but there are religious believers who are sincere and base their moral values on the Bible.
