My boss told us that the office outing this year will not be paid for by the company nor even subsidised.

Now, I enjoy the company of my colleagues enough to spend a few hours of my free time with them, but not enough to spend £50+ for the privilege.

I told them as much, and offered a cheaper compromise: we each buy a 4-pack of Special Brew and a Ginsters pie then sit in the park drinking one afternoon.

Unfortunately they were not keen on the idea, but on the plus side I've been booked on the next alcohol addiction workshop ON COMPANY TIME!!! Get in!

Christmas is supposed to celebrate Jesus' birth.
I for one don't mind the festive season, but just don't like the over commercialisation that starts so early. Just wish it would snow a bit more, so it would feel 'traditionally festive'.

I'm no fan of Christmas either and I've got a young'un now but that hasn't made me any less grumpy! In fact, more so if you ask the wife!

Alastair Sim here as the best movie version of Scrooge and Albert Finney below as the best Musical version of the 'Christmas Carol' film. At least we get to see some of the old favourites on the box at Christmas if nothing else.... here comes the, 'Ya joking aren't ya? Its all repeats'!

The 3 kids get 200 notes each on presents. Me and mrs weetabix spend a one'er on each other and have a pre-christmas meal at my lodge.

I agree Christmas starts really early but people start thinking about Christmas early because it is so expensive.

My partner and I have 20 people to buy for this year and that's not a lot compared to some families. If we was to do £200 that's £10 per present which is fine for the very young kids but not so much for the older kids.
£10 in a card used to be great when I was a teenager but no so much now.

It's end of August and we have already sat down planning what we get who with which wage packet leading up to Decemeber, and neither of us gets paid before Christmas day so we don't have that month to help us.

I keep saying, put away £30 month through out the year and we'd be sorted, but it never happens.

Well - who is it that has dragged up a nine year old thread with the majority of the posts saying they don't like the C word?

Assuming, which we must not do these days, that your partner is a man and you, Michelle, are a woman, is he as keen to start thinking about the C word in August, a third of the year before the event and three months earlier than the original poster, or dare I suggest he couldn't give a toss and wishes you would leave him in peace?

As you say EFL, you can't make assumptions nowadays and to a great extent, Michelle, or the partners sex (sorry gender) is completely immaterial. This is obviously a subconcious cry, knowing that Christmas baubles will soo be on the supermarket shelfs, and Michelle's still not ready - financially or mentally - to deal with it.

It's obvious that a bit of sympathy is needed here. Well sorry Michelle, you're getting none from me; you've got 4 paydays to save for the inevitable, so suck it up, and deal with it.

What kids want more than anything is not huge presents, but lots of time with undivided attention (no smartphones or tablets) from their parents.

Play word games, board games, silly games, pretending games, dressing up games, whatever suits their age group.

They will love it and they will remember it as happy times.

Well, your assumption of my partner EFLImpudence is quite stereotypical and outdated and you're right, assuming mustn't be done these days. He's not annoyed, I'm not nagging if that's what you're implying and he's very active and keen when organising occasions. Like I, he doesn't like leaving things till last minute.

It's not really many payslips away when retailers are already thinking about it and we're splitting it up so we don't break the ban, Christmas costs more than just presents.

Doggit I'm not asking for sympathy and I suck it up and deal with it every year like everyone else but, this is a forum, I found this post and wanted to share how I understand why retailers do start advertising Christmas early. Because it can be so expensive.

The list is for kids/teens only and not all 20 are mine , it's a large family but we don't spend 1 day where we are all together. We often do look for games as a gift though.
