If we had thrown a very significant wad of cash at this issue over past years to present day, we wouldn't now be in this situation, or at least not to the same extent.
Many more patrol boats constantly monitoring our sea border.
Exploit drone technology to monitor sea border to assist aforementioned patrol boats.
Migrants in small boats picked up.
Migrants taken to purpose built (clean, safe, heated etc) camps until reviewed by visa/immigration.
Migrants processed quickly by the dozens upon dozens of additional visa/immigration staff that
should have been in place.
Of course it's not as straightforward as this for a number of reasons (appeals, do-gooders, the French quite happy to see them off their shores etc) however there is no doubt in my mind the UK could have been doing much more about this, yes at significant financial cost, however it could have been done.
