Hi Forum

Firstly I apologise if this should have been posted in the plumbing forum, but as it related to my kitchen extension I thought id try here!

Basically I have finished digging trenches for the foundations for my extension, but I have a waste pipe that runs through the middle of what will be the floor. Rather than this cracking in years to come, I am going to replace it with new pipe work, I also have some other drains that take rainwater / kitchen waste that need to be incorporated into a new inspection chamber that will be outside the external walls.

The current clay pipe seems to be about 5" thick (although it could be 160mm ive only roughy measured). My question is whether i need to replace this pipe with the large 160mm pipe or whether I can replace it with the 110mm size? Im guessing there may be some standards, but i cant seem to find much info on the web?

Id be interested in finding out more about this subject so thanks in advance for more info!

Th,anks

it sounds as though you have the old clay salt glaze thick wall piping, which in fact will have the same internal diameter as new plastic 110mm pipe.

wherever you decide to connect from salt glaze to plastic you have the choice of using a plastic push fit type connector or a fernco rubber jubilee clip type. both are purpose made to connect thick wall pipe to plastic.

Thats great, I hadnt even considered the internal dimension, that makes a lot more sense. There seems to be a real cost saving too with the 110mm pipe and fittings.

I have seen the clay pipe attachments and have decided to use the jubilee clip style fitting, seems a strong solution to me!?

Just for my own interest what would the 160mm pipe be used for? larger scale developments??

Thanks again for the info!

160 mm pipe tends to be used where larger volumes of sewer waste needs to be moved, usually where multiples of houses spill into a shared run.
