Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer. Learned some interesting stuff. Currently draining system down to get rid of all the crud. Then we will be inviting some people to discuss the situation and the cost.

ive got an old potterton prima that was here when i moved. Just updated to megaflo and pressurised the heating.
