thinking of putting in solar panels, have oil and solid fuel connected to existing double coil cylinder. have a spare single coil cylinder and am wondering if it is possible to connect both cylinders together to give me the volume of water for the solar panels instead of having to install a much bigger 3 coil cylinder - any ideas

possible.but not worth the material cost, loss of efficency, room and hassel.scrap or sell both cylinders and put towards a 3 coil.

Three coil cylinder. For multiple fuel sources a thermal store is the only proper option. Gives main pressure DHW as well.

An easy and very cheap system is to use a normal cylinder to preheat the water using solar in the heating coil.

You just connect the "solar" preheating cylinder as the first in series with the existing.

Of course you are not heating the full volume of the system but it gives most of the savings of solar without having to buy an over priced cylinder with the work "solar" on the outside.
