Poorly implemented, fitted, etc. A heat bank/ thermals store is not the equiv of an unvented cylinder. They are much, much more.

And er, thermal losses? perhaps the thermal stores you speak of are combination units with no OSVP or fully insulated combination units such as the DPS range. don't suppose you could give the standing heatloss over 24hrs any of the above.

The standing heatloss for the Kingspan range of twin coil unvented cylinders.

over 24hrs

90ltr = 1.02kw

120ltr = 1.28kw

150ltr = 1.60kw

180ltr = 1.89kw

210ltr = 2.03kw

250ltr = 2.33kw

300ltr = 2.56kw

Go with the advice given by your installer, pre-heat cylinder. Request that they fit a sun-to-tap valve. Basically a thermostatic mixer which will draw from pre-heat if adequate. Only accept RESOL valves and controls. The panels are only as good as the solar gains they achieve, your installer should be capable of doing a calculation to give you this information. If all installed well and with a good orientation to the sun you will have plenty of very hot water, well in excess of 56.

good advice especially about RESOL the amount of honeywell heating valves and Europa/dab circulators i have ripped out (fitted by a now defunct Solar company from Bournemouth who claimed his collectors were made by mercedes benz )

we only use RESOL controls and valves

Given that there will be times when only 1 or 2 people will be in occupancy and the OP is thinking of having 2 x 250l cylinders why would you want to heat a 250l cylinder with the boiler. If you use a twin coil at least you've only got to heat 150l on days when there is little solar irradiance and the recovery time will be lower.

If you load store 1 first on marginal days you may still have suffcient water if the occupancy is low.

I do use the Resol 32a and the Honeywell 4044c which I've yet to have a problem with.

Weren't the collectors direct flow u pipes made by Ritter?.

To get the maximum energy from solar collectors they should be angled southwards.

However, to get most early morning energy then they should be angled towards the east if there is limited storage compared with the demand.

The reality is tht the greatest demand in in the mornings yet the greatest collection is by the afternoon!

Most standard systems on a good day have stored as much as they can by lunchtime. So in that case some bias towards the east might not be a bad idea if the storage is limited.

Of course the unfortunate reality is that a professionally fitted system has no payback period during normal financial conditions.

Of course now with interest on your savings of about 1.5% then now is the time to get your solar fitted! It might be possible to calculate a payback period within your life expectancy.

Solar panels and unvented cylinders are a very bad idea, especially having two of them. It you are obsessed with pressurized cylinders then get a pressurised heat bank/thermal store. Advanced Appliances will a stainless steel one.
