Competitors - what to do

People buy from people
People do not like pushy sales people
People respect knowledge
Do not try to be cheapest try to be the best
Make sure it's clean and tidy
Do not worry about the person down the road
Enjoy it and that should rub off on everyone else.

Thanks, great advice and very to the point!

I think often small firms are more 'personable' than bigger ones for the reason that they can't afford to and don't really need to employ pushy salespeople. Similarly, local firms (myself included) are often my knowledgeable as they haven't walked into the business as a job, but have set up their own firm as it is their passion.
With this comes a lot of pride, in presentation, and also when it comes to pricing/valuing products and services.

What the struggle is, is getting all of that across to the customer who is pinching pennies.

Glad to hear that you can see some options now, and that you're feeling positive.

Re the POS question, yeah I'd suggest starting a new post with POS (or even Point of Sale for the hard-of-acronyming) in the title. This thread has been around for a few weeks now so you'll find that many won't revisit it.

Good luck!
