514.4.2 amendment 2 of BS7671:2018

It sort of suggests that it was permissable before before 2022?

Fair enough, but through the editions, that message becomes ambiguous...

If it explicitly states that single core cables can only be used as a protective conductor and can't be overmarked at their termination, then where does that leave multi core cables; especially when you were also told that cores shall be identifiable at their terminations, and only preferably throughout its length.

The wiring regs are an evolving document. That can lead to ambiguity and contradictions.
The writers of the regs must have seen that there was enough ambiguity here to 'allow' oversleeving of a green/yellow core in a cable, or why would they bother to tighten up the definition?

When I served my time in the 1970's with Norweb it was instilled into us.

As far as I'm aware, the tightening up was to stop the likes of kitchen fitters, plumbers and the 2 week wonders using the earth conductor as a live wire.
