Would it be possible to abandon the embedded pipework and re0rout pipes above floor level?

almost impossible I'd say as I'd still have to dig up the cold mains under the kitchen sink to isolate the mains to other parts of the house. but I will definitely keep that in mind.
 
Can you not run the pipes in the ceiling?.

All ours are run throughout the ceiling then dropped down where required.

I don't really like plastic but if I were to be burying (sp?) pipe underground or under screed I'd be using plastic.

It is possible but as I said before the Main supply is under the kitchen sink and it Tee's off two ways under the floor. I'd have to find that at least to isolate one of the legs.

Why not bring a new mains feed up the outside, well protected against freezing [even use trace heating and a Stat?] and a new entry point into the property?
