I have one of those HD connector cables mentioned previously and it works really well. It can be used on all types of HD's and also floppy and CD/DVD drives.
With regards to the OP's problem, I was getting the BSOD a few weeks ago, and then XP would not boot and just gave the BSOD and some or other error codes.
I spent a day and a few evenings googling for fixes and trying the various boot disks, but it was just not worth it. Most answers to the various error codes I was getting suggested a RAM, HD, MFT or boot sector problem. but nothing I did would fix it
I ended up just buying a new HD, reinstalling the OS and software, and then copying files from the old HD with the cable above
