Have read some of other topics in this forum. I need an appliance which would function as a drill/socket/screwdriver with hammer action. I have considered an impact driver, but is that all it does? I have a cheap B&D which eats batteries and chargers but want high end DIY/low contract. I am aware of DeWalt etc but is there a good one I could look at without paying premium prices. 18 Volt seems to be the right area.

Makita on the back page of the latest screwfix catalogue........£100 ;)

Very good drill. Fairly light and compact but well made with plenty of grunt. 2 batteries, case and an accesories set thrown in. Excellent value, especially earlier this year, as they were doing them for £75 then  ;)

I am trying to decide between Bosch GSB range, De Walt Makita and Metabo. Decision day is today as my wife is purchasing as a birthday present.

I can highly reccomend the dewaly 998 18V drill/driver, it reallyy does kick @ss, it outperforms my old bosch (cent remember model no) 650W mains drill apart from max speed and of course the mains one didnt need charging! I never use the bosch now. MY 998 came with a 15 min charger so no major problems there.
The only cordless ones I can compare it to is a Performance pro (B&Q special) 36V and the 36V doesnt come anywhere near. And also a b&D (cant remember the name though - top of the BD range about 12 months ago though), still doesnt come close.

Make sure you get a set of Irwin cordless drillbits - those things are magic.

Yes they are, pity the box is such a pain to open/close/get bits out
