I thought storing wines have to be on their side and yet when you buy it, it's not

This has always baffled me. The idea (as I understand it) is that the bottle is laid on its side so that the wine stays in contact with the cork. This prevents it (cork) from drying out and shrinking.

Not so much of a problem with plastic or screw-top.
