Why is it that silicone hoses can't be used? Is it the issue of heat transfer or is it simply neatness?

It is a bit daft how they give hobs the same threaded connector that goes on a cooker. Is this possibly due to other countries having different regs that allow rubber hoses? Perhaps if they gave it a different connector then people wouldn't go DIY-ing them with the wrong type of tube!
