Hi guys, just in the process of moving and the first thing I want to tackle is the staircase. I plan to spray white with a black banister.

Could someone tell me what this has been finished with and how you would tackle / best products to use?

Many thanks! :)

Rub with meths. Any come off?
If nothing comes of its polyurethane varnish or oil finish.
Meths won't strip oil based paint.
If something comes off it's waterbased varnish or stain.
Wire wool and 180 grade sand.
Few spray cans of BIN warmed up.
Then you need to think about what paint.
A water-based alkyd paint resisted skin oils best but for lighter traffic then maybe a acrylic paint..
I used scuff-x satin on mine. Sprays amazingly.

Hey mate and many thanks for the input, greatly appreciated! I get the keys in a couple of weeks so will see any comes off with meths. If not do you then suggest 'Wire wool and 180 grade sand'? to give it a key prior to priming?

Is there an alt to the BIN cans as there's 3 flights of these and it would work out pretty costly.

Yes heard great reviews about the scuff-x, pretty sure I'll take that route.

What sprayer did you use out of interest?

Thanks :)

3 cans would cover spindles on a standard stair spindles ( not hand rail ect) and take about 15mins.
Take about 3 to 5 hours to paint by hand and not as good of finish.
I've got a 3 stage turbine to spray stairs but you can use a haupon tm-71 with a 2.5mm nozzle and a splash of water in paint. You will need to practice with it though.

I also have an airless gx 21

Thanks for that, appreciated! If it happens to be a polyurethane varnish or oil finish what approach should I take. I’ve got hold of an ultra quick shot that I plan to use. Do you have an primer recommendation that I could spray with this prior to scuff x?

Id still stick with zinsser BIN rattle cans warmed. You don't really want to be cleaning your sprayer with meths.

Then I'd use any basic acrylic primer undercoat to kill the background colour and will confirm you get no staining.
Then scuff-x
Johnstons make some acrylic primer undercoats.
Bullseye 123 also sprays nice as a primer over BIN
