Hi all.

We live in a 1950's ex local authority house which has a hideous brick fire surround in the sitting room.

We are hoping to buy a multi- fuel insert stove to replace the original open fire but are unable to find a fire surround which suits the house.

I don't really like the look of tiles, laminated surrounds and limestone and marble surrounds look too grand for the space (as well as being expensive!)

Is it possible (and safe?!) to plaster or plasterboard over the brick surround before putting the stove insert in or will it crack in time?

...or has anyone got any other cunning ways of covering up the ugly brick surround cheaply and quite plainly?
