Crawl space/loft boards fixed with metal?

So, starting to board my attic

There are some boards up there that were placed there during the build in the 60s. Obviously then are just nailed to the joist, with minimal insulation.

However, at one end, it looks like one board has been nailed through a bit of metal protruding from the wall.

Any ideas what this is?

Its a wall strap. The other end you cannot see will be bent at 90 degrees and attached to the wall. Is my guess
 
Whilst agreeing with you, I don't understand the need for a wall strap there.
That's what I was thinking.
If it was me I would lift the other boards to put the insulation in but leave that one. I was thinking that there would be a joist directly under but the boards run the wrong way for that.

From what I can tell with the joists, which are only a few cm thick, I don't quite get what it is nailed to as you can see there are four nails in a line
 
Also that cement colour block ? under the breeze blocks - is that the same on the other side too
 
Does the far end disappear into the mortar of the wall?

Doesn't look like it to me.
