I have a sixties house with a traditional wood staircase. The second tread from the bottom creaks every time it's trod on. There is no access to the underside. The tread is moving in the riser on which it sits. Is there any way of stopping the noise? Is it likely that the riser would be thick enough to take a couple of screws down through the tread into the end of the riser? Kind regards to all.

can you get underneath if you need to
the riser could be as little as 9mm

I glued 9mm mdf to face off each riser, improved creaking but most stairs creak eventually.

That's it, without access under the stairs to tighten up the wedges, a couple of screws through the tread in to the riser should stop the squeak.
Hope this helps.
