Damproof Granite walls

Firstly I am a complete novice, but have received advice from a local builder that I should use Tanking to solve my damp problems which are in the lower levels of my house. I own a traditional Cornish type end terrace house ( in the Scilly Isles ). The Granite stones have been pointed with ram ( the house is about 200 years old ). One of the exposed walls has additional plaster the other not.

I would be grateful for any help or advice?
