Avril has just received a quite convincing letter from a debt recovery company, Opus, claiming to have 'bought' an unpaid debt, from a company she has never had any dealings with, offering to accept £300 in full settlement of a debt of just over £1000. The letter provides some details to login to their website, where a form invites you to fill in even more detail, such as DOB, and so on. Whilst it is a genuine company, a bit of research suggests they do send out false letters claiming payment for non-existent debts, as well as scam phone calls doing likewise.

Look at your credit report. Any debts will be on there so you can check if you want.
When satisfied ignor the scam

Trust Pilot reviews for Opos Ltd make ineresting reading! Why haven't these conmen been stopped (rhetorical question, no need to answer).

Corrected to Opos (y)

Opus or Opos

Edit------------ at a minimum they should be able to tell you where the original debt originated.

She what scowls at me ran a credit check back in 2018 for herself. Turns out that I have a car loan with a company called black horse (or something similar to that) . I don't drive. My credit rating is a mess but no one has pursued me for the 6 year old supposed debt.

Point taken. Thanks.

I do have two historical CC debts that I am close to paying off. One of then should have been cleared by now but the (resold debt) A-hole debt collectors on one of the debts would not allow me to pay the monthly amount mandated by the court (CCJ that I was unaware of at the time). They phoned me in 2018. I said I was happy to pay the monthly amount determined by the court. They refused to accept any payment unless I could prove my earnings. I explained that as a self employed person, I can only base my income on my previous year's income. They went ahead and applied for an attachment of earnings. I then had to fill in a N95 form to prevent the bailiffs turning up. They applied for an attachment of earnings even though they know I am self employed. I am guessing that it pushed my outstanding debt up by about £700 in their spurious legal fees. I guess that I need to contact the debt holder Arrow Global, from memory. My debt was re-resold to another company, they were happy to let me pay each month. They leave me alone, I pay them every month.

Ah ok. @Trazor

I know someone that was bankrupt and 10 years later after buying a house and getting married they came knocking. Lost the new house.
Guess loans ect are different. I just don't trust the system tbh.

No, after 6 years, they cannot, unless it's HRMC, or a mortgage....They are Statute barred, unless you made even a single payment in that time.

I didn't know that, tnx.

It isn't my debt regardless though. I think it is likely to be an error. Had I taken out a loan to buy a vehicle, I would imagine that someone would pursue the unpaid debt

Opos, and the letter also mentions Arrow Global.

My historical debt was sold by Capitol One to Arrow global. They then transferred the debt through various debt collection agencies.

Opos seems to be a scam (based on my quick google search), Opus seems to be a legitimate debt collection agency.

Make of that what you will. I guess you could contact Arrow Global directly. I would not want to communicate with a supposed debt collection agency that wants you to provide information that they seem to be able to unverify in the first place.

Please let us know how you get on.

A friend of mine had a credit card debt, he received all sorts of letters threatening him with court action and bailiffs.
He just ignored them as he didn't have any assets anyway.
The debt was on his credit file for exactly 6 years and then it just disappeared, a few months later the same credit card company that had blacklisted him, sent him a letter offering him a credit card offering 0% interest for 12 months as an introductory offer.
My mate accepted their offer and used it to book a holiday in Benidorm.
He had a great holiday but is now back on the blacklist for another 6 years.
