Hi guy's

Been using my cordless drill for this job for years but we now have a client with 107 control cabinets which require a lot of dismantling and re-assembly for maintenance and repair.

So I think I shall invest in one of these

Any suggestions?

Cheers

This gets posted every week or so. search for cordless driver and the choice is yours. If its day to day use stick with the professional brands like Makita, Hitachi, Bosch, Dewalt, Metabo etc...

But if its light trade as Big-Al will no doubt point out, get some Ryobi gear. More than adequate. They have some excellent deals on the one+ cordless tools.

I have a makita 18V Impact driver for bigger jobs and a smaller 7.2V Li-Ion impact driver for small hard to reach places.

Whats your budget?

Cool and thatnks for the help..

However the search function here is pretty useless and in the last 3 months there didn't seem to be any reference

I like the look of the Bosch 10.8 GSR10.8V

Cheers

Richard

Yes they seem to be excellent drivers with lots of torque. Pretty compact too. I was thinking about getting one but I've bought too many now

Get the new revision with the 1.3Ah Li-Ion bats rather than the 1.0Ah. Also they do a GDR variant which is the imapact version packing 100nm of torque!

For a good day to day workhorse I would use one of these

http://www.itslondon.co.uk/pd_MAK6270DWPE3_6270DWPE3_Makita12vCordlessDrillDriver.htm

Or you can upgrade to Nimh batteries for a bit more money.

But it is a personal thing really Makita, Bosch (blue), Dewalt, Metabo are all good brands. personally I will be steering clear of Li-ion batteries until I hear more positive things about them, there have been problems with overeheating and lack of power from what I have read.

That's just another cordless drill -which is what I was trying to get away from, but thanks none the less..

either go for the bosch gsr10.8 which is a good bit of kit or look for the durofix 10.8v which is more powerful and faster than the bosch.
Not impressed with the bosch 10.8v impact driver , its very slow - again the durofix 10.8 impact driver is a lot better

as regards the lithium batteries the 10.8 and the 36v seem to be fine most of the problems seem to be with mid sized high ah batts

I bought the bosch GSR 10.8 recently and dont like it.

Its not the newer version but;

The light on it is useless
It doesnt have a brake, which just annoys me becasue im used to them now.
Li-Ion batteries
It doesnt stand up

Will be selling as soon as i can be bothered.

Apologies to the OP I misunderstood your reason for needing a new driver, I thought that your original driver was kaput

I have an earler version of this bit of kit from Metabo

http://www.metabo.co.uk/SPECIAL-ADVANTAGES.21116.0.html

as a screwdriver it works well, however this model has li-ion batterries so it wouldn't be my first choice. I guess you are looking for a smallish bit of kit. I also have the makita 7.2v impact driver

http://www.makitauk.com/index.php?page=189

This has li-ion batteries also (I bought this when they first came out before all the bad press about li-ion started) I find it a bit quick from take off until the impact driver kicks in. A good bit of kit though, and i haven't had any probs with the batts but it hasn't really been used in a proper battle yet :)

What sort of torque are you looking for?

Many thanks,

As I say this is mainly for enclosure work and not heavy duty fixing. WE have a lot of dismantling/re-assembling to do on these cabinets as they have an inherent latent defect. The manufacturer has asked us to retrofit them with a spacer plus other faults found..

I'm not going to be using this lots -more little and often.

I like the Durofix but worry about them being new into the market -like ELU were the greatest till they weren't....

Cheers

I have the Bosch, had it for about 18 months now and love it. The batteries go for loads of screws between charging, it charges in 30 minutes, or you can part charge for 15 if you're in a hurry. Plenty of power and will stand being dropped without damage. A straight toss-up between that and the 7.2v Makita I reckon.[/quote]

the bosch is good (the driver not the impact driver ) the makita is a bit of a toy - the durofix is the dogs danglies of small drills .
we've been selling them since last september and have yet to see a faulty one
