It all depends how big a price you want to put on being safe rather than sorry - cheaper alternatives may not suit your decking style and reduce the quality.

that is true, and I aprecciate the sentiments but I cant really afford the proper strips

putting those black plastic grids over the deck means you may as well make the whole thing out of beer crates. Is it worth saving up to do it?

How about a bit of old carpet tacked down? It would look naff but should do the job as a temporary measure. Should be scroungable for free. Or you could go the whole hog and lay a nice red carpet strip. That will impress the neighbours!
