degreasing extractor grease filter

Hi all,

anyone know of a good and ideally environmentally friendly way to clean the grease filters on a smeg extractor hood?

these consist of a metal mesh, made up of loads of seperate sheets all sandwiched together.

it's dripping grease onto the hob...?!

any help appreciated
