Dimmer switch causes flashing light

Hello I was wondering of someone can help with a lighting problem.

I have just taken out a strip light and replaced with a normal pendant fitting. At the same time replacing the switch with a dimmer switch. Light turns on and off OK but if I try to dim it it begins to flash on and off in a strobe effect. Only 2 wires going to switch L1 and return I assume?

I have done the same thing in another room on the same circuit with no problems.

Is it a faulty switch? something to do with energy saving bulbs? or something I've done wrong? ( tried reversing the wires to the switch makes no difference)

All help received as it is puzzling me. Thanks

You cannot dim most energy saving lamps. Try it with a normal lamp.
