After the recent downpours in March and April, I noticed two areas of the garden where rainwater collected. These correlate with dips in the ground. They are maybe 12" diameter and maybe 2-3" deep (estimate and not measured). Far too deep to just fill with topsoil and add grass seed.

A colleague at work suggested cutting the turf lengthways along the hollow, then a few perpendicular cuts to allow the turf to be rolled back in strips. The dip can then be filled.

Having never done this before, what do I need to look out for? Any videos or step-by-step instructions on what to and not to do?

absolutely, slice it, undercut to separate roots, roll back, top soil underneath, trample with feet, some root grow, roll back, tamp down, lots of water. No video required. Maybe some top dressing to help knit together.

That's how I did mine. No real skill involved. You won't get it perfect but it will be better. I used s straight edge to estimate how much I had to lift it by.
