Disc for cutting sandstone paving?

Ah right it sounds like that may be what I am doing wrong then and probably why the blades are getting knackered!

So just to be clear I should be cutting like this then, pulling the tool towards me:

hmm well that vid is what I am doing as in moving the tool away from my body as I cut. The only thing I'm not clear on is blade rotation, looks like in that pic blade is rotating clockwise down into the slab, whilst for me it would look anti-clockwise.

Hopefully to be a bit clearer, the setup I have with the dust guard is like in the photo below. I have added an arrow to show rotation. So in that picture with blade rotation, would I be pushing the grinder up to cut or pulling it down towards the floor?

Have you fitted the blade according to the arrow on the grinder? Leading edge needs to cut downwards

Post the model number of your cutter

Makita DGA513Z 18V Li-Ion LXT Brushless 125mm Angle Grinder

I think that grinder is wrong way round, the label would normally be underneath, and it should cut clockwise ,ie dust aiming for feet when cutting.
Quick thought are you left handed?

No, not left handed. The problem is that dust shroud only lets you fit it to the grinder one way...

I think whats confusing is the grinder is mounted in the hood the opposite way around to using without.

yep, the dust hood will only fit to the grinder one way, and that is with the blade rotating upwards, presumably so that dust created is aimed up towards the dust extract nozzle. There is an arrow for blade direction on the shroud so it is definitely fitted as intended. There is no suggestion in the product description that the shroud is only for use for raking out mortar joints, but perhaps that is the main function and maybe the blade direction doesn't matter so much for that type of job.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I have wasted my money on that dust shroud, and that I will have to remove it so that I can cut with the blade in the right direction. I really wanted to cut down on the amount of dust created so it seemed like a good idea, and had been doing a good job (of collecting dust, not cutting...). Maybe I will just stick a hose over the slab whilst I'm cutting and seeing if that helps with the dust

Out of interest, I dont know what the difference is between the 125mm and the 115mm models but 125mm discs fit within the guard of the latter and thats what I use to get a little extra depth of cut

Same here, bit of a tight fit in the guard and a few sparks till something wore down!

I guess it's a power thing, but given that my first Bosch grinder was 550w and my current one is 900w I think it'll cope.
