Hi my friend has asked me to put this question on for him as he has no net access at the moment.

He says every time he starts his PC it does a disk check.

He doesn't know why this is or what triggers it and wants to stop it.

Any ideas?

on xp, it could be the drives are marked as "dirty" try this initially

start/run/cmd

chkntfs /d

Hi, Yes he shuts down normally from the start bar and he has Windows XP home edition with the SP2 upgrade they did.

I'll get him to try the chkntfs bit and let you know what happens

That

start/run/cmd

chkntfs /d

command, can it be run from the command prompt that you can get to in Accessaries from the Start bar, or do you have to restart the PC to get to a command prompt via F8?

Yes. Or just Click START, then RUN and then type CMD and press ENTER. You will now get a command prompt window. Now type the CHKNTFS /D command and press ENTER.

The reason I usually advise doing it from a command prompt is that if theres a message or anything after then it wont vanish like it will from the run box.
