It should still be checked by a gas engineer (not the one who told u to leave the front off)

It was a gas safe man who told me to keep the cover off.

Well it was officially the wrong thing to say.

The correct thing to say is you should leave it open to dry out but turned off.

If you wanted to take a risk then some might still use it but only when it is closed.

Perhaps he was just trying to "be nice"? But in that case he should; have told you that you could still use it but only with the cover firmly on. At the risk of the leaking water damaging the electrics!

The last one that I did, after replacing the diverter, I then discovered that the PCB was damaged by water leaking into the stepper motor, so a new PCB was also needed. Yet another reason why a fixed price repair can sometimes be good value.

But most I go to only need the diverter valve.

Thanks to you both for the warning. I know what I have to do. May I ask what is unsafe about using the boiler with the casing off?

It is room sealed and designed so that nothing in the boiler can leak into the room.

Your boiler sucks in air from outside for combustion
Without the cover on it sucks the air from the room.
In the bathroom with steam that is particularly bad and could cause poor combustion high co etc
In a fault situation you could be at serious risk.
You could also be fine but no risks should be taken.

Thanks Phill Peck, that's interesting to know. I will do as you have advised. Safety is my main concern now. I'll go and get a couple of electric oil filled rads to use for the time being.

Looking back over the last few days I have come to the realisation that the diverter valve has only started to leak after a hot water tap has been used. If just the central heating has been on, but no hot taps used, the diverter valve has not leaked at all. Does this sound correct??

Yes, it leaks on the shaft seal when the shaft is moved!
