The cut-out was recently replaced and this is the MET the DNO left. Previously it was a soldered earth.

Hardly anyone can do plumbing anymore so there won't be a soldered connection. That ain't right though, that is part of an earthing kit for a PILC service cable to plastic concentric straight joint and there is a bit of metal that goes round the lead sheath, you can just about see it in this pic of mine

They could of just done that it would of been alot safer as they've used the jubilee clip and mesh that's for bonding the armours down!

We have special clips for connecting the earth to the lead at the cutout that don't strangle the cable and don't have the risk of blowing UP! maybe the guy who did it just doesn't care!

Doesn't look a clean joint at all...

Our DNO uses a spring type coil that wraps securely round the sheath and is then taped over.

OOI, what is the Ze? Do you know?

Roll springs!? I hate them they are a total PITA to fit! Fairplay to them for using them though they do work fine :D

Why was the main Cut-Out Service Fuse Block replaced in the first place?

At least the Service Fuse Block was made in England, and not some Far Eastern place!

That jubilee clip is dreadful! Unfortunately most customers wouldn't know what an earth connection was, let alone how it should be engineered.

The outlook isn't all bad though. My old Siemens service head gave up the ghost and started smoking on new years eve, so a call to Western Power, and they were out within a couple of hours. A young lad, obviously apprenticed and supervised, and very well too, did a beautiful job of jointing a 16mm earth to the lead sheath with one of the nicest wiped joints I've seen for a while, heat shrink firmly applied over the old paper insulated tails and over the wiped joint itself, complete with loop test. Its one of the most polished head changes I've seen recently, done completely by this young lad, and lo and behold, in my own house. Its as if they knew I was a sparky!

It made me realise there still are some core skills out there - and that they're being passed on.

Oh, okay but it'll be at least the weekend. This week is leaving at 6, home at 8, food and bot wine then bed so far. Turning the lamp out now...

And theres none of the old head unfortunately - all happened too fast.

The cut out was replaced due to the previous one's age and getting a little warm. It supply's a small industrial unit and was changed on a Sunday, not as a emergency but as a urgent job. I have yet to speak to the owner and try (god knows) to get the DNO (E-ON/Central Networks) back to provide a decent earth.
