Ok, so just draining my system to fit a standard TRV on a radiator in the hall since the thermostat got moved from in there (towel rad is now the rad which no longer has a TRV).

I have a radiator at the back of the house with the drain valve and I also have one in the hall with a drain valve by the front door. (the one im working on)

I turned boiler off, stuck a pipe on the drain valve at back door and opened it up. Went upstairs and unscrewed the bleed valves and water rushed out the pipe...all good. So at this point ive done nothing with the downstairs rads other than the one i was working on in the hall which had bleed valve open and both lockshields closed (which id forgot).

I then thought to myself, i only need to drain enough so that the one im working on is empty and the feed valve is not gushing water, so i got a bowl underneath it and slowly undid it with the idea of keeping an eye on it and until it stops, then i could close the drain valve on the other rad and carry on with fitting TRV.

So i start undoing the nut and water is pouring out, i open the lockshields (that i just remember were locked) and water starts firing out the bleed valve.

So im a bit confused, have i just drained one 'zone' and now need to drain another, are my rads all piped up in a weird order... Or do i just need carry on, open all downstairs bleed valves and allow more time to drain?

If it is 2 zoned, what are the benefits if any?

the room that you have moved the room thermostat to should have the TRV removed now and replaced with the Lockshield that you are removing from the hall rad

Yeah, job for another day! Can i not just unscrew the head and leave the pin permanently up?

yes you can do that but if you intend to swap them then best done while you already have the system drained to fit the TRV in the hall
