Do you have to let HMRC know if you're earning money from a different type of work?

So if for example you are a self employed carpenter. But you start working as a self employed carer or cleaner do you let them know?

I would say no, money's money. Just declare income in the usual way.
That's sort of what I'm thinking. I'd be working for a family member though so it might look a bit iffy,,?

pretty certain it wont ask who your working for it will just ask what the additional income is from

Presumably you are going to keep some sort of accounts? Is it in addition to, or instead of carpentry work?

Make sure you account for all your expenses, materials, travel costs etc. And are you raising an invoice for each payment? If anybody gets interested, that's the bit that might trip you up, money going into your account and nothing to account for it.

If you don’t have a mortgage and hope to get one then declaring all your income is in your best interest

Thanks people. Think I'll phone HMRC and see what they say?

So a little update. I went on twitter spoke to HMRC. They want me to update my details. So now I suppose I'm a multi trade. Builder/carer.
