i think most smokes will permit fitting to a wall, but please find more info re BS5839-6, this will detail the correct spacings for the detectors. e.g., on a ceiling, they should be 300mm from the wall or other objects which may affect its operation.
I know there are dimensions given for wall mounting smokes, but having always fitted them to a ceiling myself, im not sure what this distance is.
