Does part P go far enough?

So what's that going to make adding a new socket cost?

And can you show evidence of that regime being justified on safety grounds, or is it just a wheeze to boost your income?

Part P could be made a lot simpler.

Let diyers do what ever they like, but everything they do has to be inspected, tested and formally approved by a qualified spark.

I agree better safe than sorry if not for you then any other people that can be hurt etc :D

What evidence do you have of the amount of hurt being done?

Can you show that holmslaw's regime would be justified?

I dont "have" all the equipment, but can get it & the know how to use it (B.I.L is a sparky).

Self certification seemed to work OK for many other regulated schemes, those that know nowt & cannot test would not be able to as they wouldn't be able to fill out the right information.

And all this talk about HIPS is hogwash, people will still not think certificates that important. They are so easy to either forge or say have been lost or not provided.

All my wiring was done by Achmed Electrical and i'll have the certs to prove it :D

ACHMED ELECTRICS matty I am ashamed of you  lets hope the house don burn down and they try and trace him still the safety thing gotta mean something I have modded alot of cars to make them faster etc but feel alot safer driving them after a man in the know checks them out

So you're saying "Let diyers do what ever they like, but everything they do has to be inspected, tested and formally approved by a qualified spark" even though you have no idea what the cost would be, and even though you have no idea wether it's needed, which makes you doubly unable to show that it's worth doing.

Ah well.

not getting into an argument here but both these questions can be reverse and asked back maybe?
Is it not true a trade will alway say you need to be competent and checked because I had to be and if I do and I do the same work shouldnt you otherwise we may as well have no trades
Yet a DIYer will always say its only a few wires there all colour coded and all fittings are marked and come with instructions and it will save me money if I DIY.
Thing is though where do you draw the line a wires is a wire so if you can rewire a house could you rewire a power station etc
If you see what I mean but this is getting dangerously close to a 15 page whatsit again

Cost Benefit Analyses and Regulatory Impact Analyses don't work like that.

If you want to change something, or introduce something, the onus is on you to justify it, not on someone else to prove it's not justified.

The trouble with that argument is that it leads you dangerously close to thinking that you have some general right to restrictive practices, and you don't.

There are people who earn a living as cleaners, decorators, gardeners etc - should we ban people from cleaning or decorating their own houses, or doing their own garden in order to protect the livelihood of the tradesmen?

If there are genuine safety issue then these should be addressed, but you need to have evidence of them.

BAS out of interest what is your a opinion on DIY gas installations in your own home

So where would you draw a line to what should or should not be DIY and how would you know when you knew what you were doing was right
