We are going ahead with the purchase, but we will be keeping an eye on it and are taking into consideration the cost of getting it 'fixed' if necessary.

Googled boot lintel- news to me!

But I don't understand entirely..were they never designed to bear across and onto bricks either side of void?

Or was the downward force of outer masonry held by the 'toe' not being snapped off the 'boot', seems a strange design, but it would make sense of them rotating when something goes wrong...
