I was wondering if anyone has experience of female dogs "kicking" backwards with their hind legs after nature calls, and what to do to stop her doing it! My 10 year old labrador has started doing this, and drags half the back lawn in with her, in her claws, every time! And we now have precious little back lawn left for her to use! Is it just a case of going out with her and escorting her straight back into the house for a while? She does it in a different place ever time, and not nessecarily where the call of nature occured!

I have seen a few dogs do this, but neither of mine do it.

The only advice I could offer is you need to disuade her from doing it, so as soon as she starts, distract her (put right up to her nose and draw it away so she follows you) with a "treaty-treat". If that doesn't work I'd try pulling her away straight after she's finished.

I wish you success.

It's not just female dogs that do it. I think it's something to do with wiping their scent on the ground to mark their territory. Strange though that she should just start doing it at that age though. Maybe there's been another animal in the garden that's been scent marking and she's just re-marking her patch.

Things to try:
1. You could try kicking her up the backside when she does it. ;)
2. Rip up the grass and put paving down. :D

1. will try - when neighbours aren't watching  not quite so severe though!
2. strangely, when it snowed, she got awfully confused and wouldn't relieve herself anywhere without much coaxing from my mum! Seems she will only do it willingly on grass! So paving the whole garden isn't an option!

Will have to go out with her and pull her away every time, thats a pain in the rear end for me though! getting a cat next time!

Yeah they'll do their business in someone else's garden!
Can't abide them. Cats = vermin. Ok in a chinese though ;)

LMAO at those boots! I have 2 Cavalir King Charles spaniels - both boys. One of them always does this when he has a wee when we are out walking. He will even smell where another dog has been and kick up without having done anything himself

It definitely sounds like a cat or something has been in your garden and your dog is tackling it in her own way. Scenting over it as if to say 'Get out of MY garden' LOL

All I can suggest is to keep a towel by the back door and wipe her feet when she comes in. My messy dog actually stands on the rug by the door now, waiting to have his feet cleaned :D

1. No. Dogs do not respond as quick to treatment like this. Reward them for good behaviour, not admonish for bad.

if you tie straps between the front and back legs then next time she does it she'll fall flat on her face, that should stop her doing it a second time.
