Trying to fit a new staircase but to obtain the necessary 2m vertical clearance the stairs need to be moved back. Only problem is a double joist (2 seperate joists) is in the way. Can I remove a section of one of the joists and tie in the cut joist to the second with a couple of bolts to ensure continued support for the ceiling?

Any advice appreciated.

thanks

Sounds a bit dodgy to me, you can't just remove a section of joist, can you not fix a section of new joist to the back of the uncut joist and bolt through all 3 either side of the cut section if you see what I mean. You would effectively retain a double joist run past the opening. Have a word with BC officer and see if he's game!
Have you had the inspector round yet? If its nearly 2m ie 1.95m he may be sympathetic, building regs are not neccessarily cast in stone and he may let it go if you can justify it. Photos always help.
