Double oven trips out

Hi all,

this is a quick question i think. I've bought a second hand cooker with a gas hob and a double electric oven. The bottom oven trips out the fuse box more or less straight away (its okay with just the light on). The top oven/ grill holds on the lowest temperature but anything much more also leads to that tripping out.

I suspect my best option is to take this down the tip but if there is a potentially easy fix here I'd be glad to know about it. Its running off a 32Amp fuse at a brand new fuse box so there should be no problems there. It would be strange for both heating elements to go, no?

TIA

Dave

If it has been stored somewhere cold and damp for some time the mineral insulation in the element may have absorbed moisture causing the trip. If it works at low temp. leave it switched on for a few hours and it may dry out. Disconnect the main element wires having noted where they went and see if it still trips. If not it would suggest it is faulty but again drying it may cure the problem. You really need a proper insulation tester to know for sure if the elements are faulty. Might be worth getting an electrician to test for you.

Thank you so much! I spent a day very gradually turning up the heat every hour or two on the top oven and the same on the bottom oven and both are now working fine. The oven had been stored in a garage for six years.

Replacing an oven or grill element is usually surprisingly easy. They plug in, once you have unscrewed the cover.

Damp in the element is common when they age.
